The Hokey Pokey wash…

Have you ever wondered where the Hokey Pokey song originated from?  It seems to go back to the early 1800’s and has many different names and meanings based on the lyrics below.  If you are up for a bit of history, the Hokey Cokey (as it was named in the UK) can be read about here.  The song however, from a child’s point of view is fun, catchy and has been sung and played out over many centuries and I am sure all of you have done so throughout your childhood.

The very lyrics below have got one thinking, hence the title of this post ~ The Hokey Pokey Wash.  From a boys point of view, whether being a  junior, teen or young adult;  I have recently determined that this ‘dance’ and song has more to it than we think.

Having 3 rumble tumble boys, one must agree that these creatures little darlings are far from clean.  Dirt on faces, hands, feet and all parts of the body.

Boys will be boys, it’s in their nature to be busy, active and in the great outdoors.  They are up trees, down in the mud, riding bikes through water, running and jumping in puddles, throwing sand and dirt, making mud pies etc.

So, what has this go to do with the Hokey Pokey you may ask?

When it comes to bathing and showering, have you ever noticed that even though they MAY have had a wash, they are still dirty?  Faces full of dirt, feet and legs still covered in mud (not to mention the stench).  There have been times where I have had to question my sons “did you have a shower or bath” or “did you really or did you just change your clothes”?

I have now come to the conclusion that the Hokey Pokey was INDEED written with regards to boys washing and cleaning themselves.  This IS exactly what they do below without ANY soap or a sponge and they forget point number 5 entirely:

You put your right hand in,
You put your right hand out,
You put your right hand in,
And you shake it all about,
You do the hokey pokey
and you turn yourself around
That what it’s all about.
2) left hand
3) right foot
4) left foot
5) head
6) butt
7) whole self

So, I bet you are wondering how to overcome this problem?  Well, I suggest we make a game of it,using the song but in order for it to work, they must USE soap and add “and you scrub it all about”. And making a Soap on a Rope Hanging Scrubber is an ideal way for them to give this song a much better work out.

And if all else fails, you could send them back to the wash-room and bring out a stainless steel instead!
