Married couples celebrating Valentines Day!……….Say What???

There are No Excuses for missing Valentines Day even if married and have been so for many years.  Upon discussing the very idea with my dear friend Pam who blogs at My Jewellery Box; she made a very important observation and has a guide for all those couples that may have been together for almost a lifetime.

Here is Pam’s beautiful post on Valentines Day!

So Valentines day is just around the corner, are you going to do anything special, or do you think it is overrated and another day for all those speciality shops to take more of your money?

Florists are buzzing, jewellers are grinning and we all start to think we should have shares in Hallmark. So many people will hope to find love and other may drown their sorrows in a bottle of wine. A day when new relationships bloom or hearts are broken.

But what about those who have been with their partner for years, should they celebrate it, or is it just expected that the couple loves each other and they no longer need to worry about celebrating Valentines Day?

How many times have you heard someone say, “you don’t do Valentines Day when you are married”!

Personally I think that is just an excuse used so they don’t have to bother with making an effort for the one they love. It is easier and one less thing they have to worry about.

There may have been a time when I would have agreed but having just celebrated my 13th wedding anniversary recently I think more than ever it is so important to make it known to your partner that you love them.

Even if it means we need a day like Valentines Day to prompt us, as it can be easy to get so caught up in the everyday routine of life that we can so easily forget to tell the ones we are with that we love them.

My eldest son who is 12 recently asked me the question, what is Valentines Day? I could have just said, like so many people do, that it is just another day that retailers use to make money. Instead I told him that Valentines Day is a day for couples (like mum & dad) to express to each that they love each other and that they appreciate each other and all they do.

Anyhow, I think it is a damn good excuse to go out for dinner; wear a pretty dress and heels, sit holding hands, reminisce about the old days and a bright future ahead. We deserve flowers, chocolates, wine and a little romance even if were have been hitched for all these years.

Husbands and wives, show you still care EVEN on Valentines Day. Make an effort to do something extra special and show your loved one how much they really mean to you.  It doesn’t have to be something big,  just something to say……
