Cooking with kids

So, what are your feelings with kids cooking?  Do you let them help when they are very young?  Or are you like me and let them help when they are much older.

When one has a large family; cooking with children or lots of little helpers in the kitchen can either be fun or become an extra chore due to the mess and stress involved.

Personally, I have never been a fan of this especially with the smaller children under 5 years old (too much mess and fingers in the bowl, licking, whipping nose or mouth on sleeve, sneezing etc  it’s just gross)

However, 6 going on 7 years is the best age I think.  They can mix with a wooden spoon with little mess.

Having 7 children, you come to learn what cooking or food preparation works best for individual ages.

I also believe that both BOYS and girls must also help with the cooking.  Boys are just as capable as the girls to help in the kitchen and should be taught too (real men cook and can do kitchen duties).

Fortunately, I had four girls first, followed by the boys; therefore they can help also train/teach the boys later down the track.

My 7 year old son is not yet able to peal potatoes or carrots, but enjoys stirring or mixing etc.

My 8 year old daughter has just started to do the peeling process (potatoes and carrots), she loves it and always asks to do this even if it is not on the menu.

I have also got her to cut up fruit etc (which is a little easier than some vegetables).

My three older girls of 10, 11 and 13 are quite capable and can basically cook a Main Meal, make cakes and desserts.

I would love to hear of your idea’s on what works best with your children in the kitchen.
